2 Things To Expect At Your First Chiropractor Appointment

Posted on

If you have never had a chiropractic adjustment, but are suffering from extreme back pain, now might be a good time to visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors offer natural treatment options for pain, and these treatment options can offer a great deal of relief. There are several things you should expect at your first visit at a chiropractor clinic, including the following two things.

An examination

When you arrive for your appointment, you will probably be asked to fill out paperwork. This will include answering general questions, and it will involve explaining the pain you are having. You may have to give a brief history of when the pain started and what caused it (if you know), and you will have to reveal any existing health conditions you may have.

Once you complete the paperwork, the chiropractor may perform an examination on your body. This is done for two main reasons:

  1. To test your range of motion – Your range of motion is how well you can move, and the doctor will pay particular attention to the body parts affected by the pain.
  2. To assess your pain level – The doctor may ask you to move in different ways and express the amount of pain you experience when doing this.

These tests are often used to evaluate progress in the future. They are also used to determine what the chiropractor needs to focus on when performing treatment on you.

X-rays

The second thing you may have to go through is x-rays. Most chiropractors have x-ray equipment in their offices, and taking x-rays is something that might be necessary for two main reasons:

  1. To make sure you do not have any broken bones – If you have broken bones, the chiropractor will probably send you to a doctor before he or she will be willing to perform an adjustment on your body. Performing work on a person with broken bones can be dangerous, and it could do more harm than good.
  2. To see what your spine looks like – Seeing your spine on x-rays can help the chiropractor understand what is causing your pain, and this is helpful for offering the right treatment to you. This will help the doctor see if your spine is straight, or if you have issues with your vertebrae.

Once these two tasks are complete, the chiropractor might perform an adjustment on your back and neck. This will help relieve pressure in your back and may cause a reduction in the pain you are experiencing.
